Police on Thursday intercepted a Nairobi bound bus at Ngutuni along Garissa-Thika highway loaded with contraband medicine, chewing gums and milk powder.

The Inspector-General of police Hillary Mutyambai in a press statement said the vehicle bearing the registration number KBX 267K was travelling from Daadab before it was intercepted at a roadblock.

Police inspected the bus only to find out the floor on the passenger’s side was modified to hide the contraband goods.

“It was fitted with secret storage bins which were stuffed with 49 cartons of Batook chewing gum, four cartons of 25 pieces of Tres Orix-Forte appetite stimulant and five boxes containing one thousand sachets of pain-relieving tablets,” said Mutyambai.

The police also seized three brands of contraband milk powders that were packed in 365 tins weighing 2.5 kilograms each.
“286 tins of Red Cow milk powder, 37 tins of Anchor milk and 42 tins of Nura milk powder,” said IG Mutyambai.

IG Mutyambai suspected that modification of the bus’ floor might also have been used to ferry dangerous weapons and explosives.

He gave a stern warning to vehicles’ body fabricators who deliberately modify vehicles to that ferry illegal goods.

According to the IG, three suspects, a driver and two conductors, are currently held at Ngutani police station as they wait to be arraigned.

Their arrest comes barely two days after Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i ordered security agencies in North Eastern to crack down on contraband goods in the region.

Dr Matiang’i said proceeds from the goods are used to fund terror activities in the country.

“I urge government officials to take this war seriously and stop the trade of these smuggled goods. They are funding terrorism,” he said.

Intelligence reports have shown smuggled goods from troubled Somalia pass through unofficial routes ending up in Kenyan markets generating steady income for the terror group.

IG Mutyambai in the press statement reiterated his efforts in fighting terrorists by neutralizing their operatives and cash flow.
